20th Flower Carpet of Brussels

The past year Brussels – my lovely capital – received a lot of negative attention due to terrorism. This results in about 50% less tourists staying and visiting this beautiful city. It pains my heart to see how this wonderful place gets neglected now while there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of.

Yesterday, I went to the Harry Potter Exhibition in Brussels, which is basically a smaller version of the Warner Brother Studio Tour in Leavsden. Since it only took us about an hour to get through the exhibition, we decided to go to the city center as well to get more out of our day.

And I’m so happy we did because right this weekend, the biennal Flower Carpet made the Grand-Place of Brussels even more beautiful.

Every two years, during the weekend of August 15th, the main square of Brussels gets covered by around 600000 colorful begonias, making a carpet of 75 meters long and 24 meters wide. The first carpet was created in 1971 and since 1986 every other summer another flower creation makes the Grand-Place even more beautiful.

This year, the 20th edition of the Flower Carpet is being held with a Japanese theme to celebrate the 150 year Belgo-Japanese friendship. The creation was revealed last Friday at 10pm and can be seen until 10pm tonight.

What I love most about this event, is that these flowers just match so amazingly with the Gotic architecture of the square. It really is a sight to behold! Too bad I didn’t get the opportunity to go on one of the balconies to really get a good look at this year’s creation. If I had known that this event was being held I would have informed myself a bit (and taken my camera with me so I wouldn’t have to use crappy iphone pics along with my post).

Today is your last chance to go see the carpet, so if you’re interested; head to Brussels now! And if you’re not able to make it this quick, make sure to add Brussels to your travel list anyway because there is just so much to see. Hotels have also had to drop their prices due to the fewer tourists and less demand, so now’s the time to do a really great deal. What are you waiting for?
