What better way to spend your weekend than to spend it with some friends in a rental house in the Ardennes? So that’s exactly what I did last weekend.
The Ardennes is a region in Belgium that’s known for hiking and other outdoors activities, such as kayaking, rock climbing and speleology. It has lush forests and great rivers all formed by the Ardennes mountain range. Within the densly populated Belgium, it’s a breath of fresh air.
From Friday evening until Sunday afternoon, we would all be enjoying each other’s company and that very beautiful breath of air.
Friday late in the evening we all arrived at the rental house for the weekend. After a couple of hours of catching up, we headed to bed to get enough rest for what tomorrow would bring. It promised to be an amazing weekend.
On Saturday morning we started off with a long, big breakfast before we set out for our hike. We were going to walk from Sy to Bomal and back. This trail started right in front of our rental hosue, and led through forests, meadows and along the river Ourthe. It’s about twelve kilometers and has stunning views. There is a Dutch detailed description of the trail available online, but I could translate in case anyone else is interested.
We’d brought our lunch along for the trip, which is a definite must for this hike as there aren’t many opportunities to buy food along the way. Plus, a picnic is always a good idea.
The next day, we took the car to the medieval city of Durbuy. We didn’t have a lot of time as we had to catch the train back home early in the afternoon, but that didn’t stop us from tying to get the most out of it.
We did a short hike of thirty minutes to a viewpoint over the city. This hike starts at the tourist information center and is quite heavy. Just follow the yellow rhombus across the water and up the hill. For such a short hike, the view is worth it.
The rest of our time we spend exploring this gorgeous city and enjoying the October sun while having a refreshing drink. It was another amazing day, both thanks to the environment but mostly thanks to the amazing people.
The whole weekend, we stayed at Maison Sur Ourthe. It was such a lovely house on an amazing location. This house has three bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with a bunk bed, and another with a bunk and two single beds. While it sleeps eight, it’s more convenient for six people though. There is also a fully equiped kitchen (with a dish washer, oven and microwave), living room with flatscreen and fireplace, a small dining area, seperate toilet, bathroom with bathtub, and a storage room with a washing machine. Outside there is also a table for eight and a barbecue. All one could possibly need for a great weekend away.
It’s also situated right at the Ourthe, which gives for a lovely view. The train station of Sy is only 200 meters away and the lovely city of Durbuy is a 25 minute drive. There are many hiking trails starting almost in front of the house (like the one we did) so it’s a hiker’s dream. The only downside is that the nearest supermarket is also about 7km away from the rental, so you either should bring food along or have a car at your disposal.
I really had the best weekend. Just spending some time with amazing friends, enjoying the outdoors and recharging the batteries for another week at work. What does one need more?
